Rocamadour is located in an extraordinary geological world at the heart of the Regional Natural Park of the Quercy Causses. An amazing history, both human and spiritual is inscribed in the limestone from which it is carved.

For the best view, approach Rocamadour via the valley of the Alzou – which carved out this 120-metre-deep fault – and marvel at the scene of the whole vertical town, for as they say in Rocamadour: “The houses lie above the river, the churches above the houses, the rocks above the churches and the château above the rock.”
Explore this mythical place which, across the centuries, has remained a symbol of faith and of hope and right up to our own times Rocamadour has been inspired by one of the most celebrated pilgrimages of western Christendom. You only reach the heart of the religious centre once you have climbed the great pilgrims’ staircase. Whilst today it is no longer a requirement that you climb the steps on your knees, a visit to the Chapel of Notre-Dame and its black virgin is highly recommended, for the spiritual nature of the place is most compelling. A tour of the site, the ramparts, the village and the sanctuaries may be extended by visiting the typical rural architecture to be found in the canyon.
